Multi Table Tournaments

Manchester United Poker Home>>Game Types>>Multi Table Tournaments

Tournaments differ from cash games in several ways. There are a variety of formats a tournament can take and some specific rules that apply exclusively to tournaments. Multi-table tournaments are very popular as they provide players with the opportunity to win a large cash prize from only a small investment.

Types of Tournaments

Freezeout
Each player starts with the same amount of chips and play continues until one player has won all of the chips. Once a player loses their chips, they are eliminated from the tournament. Prizes are awarded relating to the finishing position of each player. The number of places paid depends on the total number of players to have entered the tournament.

Rebuy
The structure is similar to that of a freezeout tournament with the exception that for a specified time period, if a player loses all of their chips, they have the option to purchase more chips for the same cost of the original buy-in. The rebuy period is normally either 30 or 60 minutes, with an add-on option once this period expires. The add-on option is available to all remaining players, regardless of their tournament chip balance, which allows a player to purchase additional chips to the value of the original buy-in. If a player has lost all of their chips on the final hand before the add-on option occurs, they may purchase a rebuy and an add-on at this stage. After this stage, the tournament continues as a freezeout until one player has all of the chips. Place finishes are paid out similar to a freezeout.

Turbo
In a turbo tournament, the blind levels increase at a faster rate than a standard tournament. Players still have the same amount of time to act on their turn, but with the levels increasing rapidly, there is not much time to wait around for the perfect hand. Turbo tournaments can be in either the freezeout or rebuy format, although the rebuy period will typically be shorter than for a standard poker tournament.

How to Enter

You can join by clicking the 'Tournament' tab in the lobby and choosing a tournament that is still open for registration. When your chosen tournament starts, your table will open automatically with all seats assigned randomly. Please bear in mind that if you’re already playing in the maximum number of tables allowed you’ll be presented with a dialog box asking you whether you’d like to quit one of the tables so the tournament table can launch. You will be marked ‘away from the table’ until you join the tournament table.

Game Play

Blind Levels
Blinds increase at regular intervals as the tournament progresses. These are termed as ‘levels’. The blind level stages and time period between each is shown in the 'Details' section found in the information window for each specific tournament (click the relevant tournament name from the lobby to show the information page).

Unlike cash games, blinds must be posted and cannot be missed, therefore this is done automatically. Sometimes, a dead button is used, meaning there is only a big blind posted with no small blind. This occurs when in the previous hand, the player on the big blind was eliminated from the tournament (this player would have been the small blind on the next hand). This is done to ensure each player has to post the same amount in blinds for each time the deal has moved one cycle around the table.

Table Balancing
The software will keep tables balanced in terms of the number of players seated at each. Consequently, as players are eliminated, you may be re-seated at a different table. As this is done randomly you may experience it several times during a tournament.

As the number of players remaining reduces, the software will close tables in order of the highest available until the final table is reached.

Once a player loses all their chips they are automatically removed from the table unless it is a ‘Re-buy Tournament’ whereby within a specified time period of the tournament, a player has the option to purchase more chips equal to the starting amount.

Disconnections
If for any reason a player loses his/her connection, play will continue. Blinds and antes will continue to be posted automatically and a player should log back on as soon as possible to continue play. Players will be blinded/anted out of the tournament if they do not reconnect.

Players MUST accept the risk of disconnection. This can and does occur. (Log back on and continue play as quickly as possible.) At no time will we assume responsibility for disconnected players regardless of cause.

If a player is disconnected during the play of a hand, they will be given a period of about 30 seconds in which to re-connect. If the player is not able to do so, their hand is folded unless they are 'all-in' due to posting a compulsory blind bet.

If you choose to sit out, you are deemed ‘away from the table’ and will still receive cards that will be folded in turn. Blinds will also continue to be taken when appropriate.

If you time-out or disconnect, you will be automatically marked ‘away from the table’ until you uncheck the appropriate box and re-join the game.

Pay-out Structure

The number and value of prizes paid out in multi-table tournaments is dependant on the total number of entrants.

The following table indicates what percentage of the prize pool a player will receive based on the number of tournament entrants:-
